What supplements would you recommend to a woman going through menopause? Are there any that should be avoided? Anything to help with hot flashes?

Answer:

First, make sure you’re getting all of the essential nutrients your body requires for all aspects of metabolism. Your body doesn’t make these so you must obtain them from the diet. Here’s what I recommend which you can view in our online store here

• A high quality multivitamin and mineral formula to fill common nutrient gaps. If you’re exercising regularly, I suggest the Active MV. Otherwise, take the Women’sMV if under 50 years of age or the Over50 MV if not

• If you’re not consuming 1,000 mg of calcium from your diet, try to get three servings of calcium rich foods like yogurt or fortified beverages. You can supplement with SuperCalcium+ if needed

• Try to consume 8 ounces of fatty fish such as salmon every week to get omega-3 fats. You can supplement with SuperOmega-3 Fish Oils if needed.

There aren’t any supplements that alleviate hot flashes directly, unfortunately. A diet with lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, adequate amounts of lean protein including soybeans, chickpeas and lentils provide compounds called phytoestrogens that may help. Also, some women experience fewer or less intense hot flashes by avoiding caffeine, spicy food and alcohol. Finally, regular exercise, 8 hours of sleep nightly and managing stress are also important.
